The Mind Association

Three-year Doctoral Studentship in Philosophy

The Mind Association is pleased to advertise one three-year doctoral studentship in Philosophy for non-EU candidates to be used at a UK university, starting in September or October 2010. Competition for the 2010-13 Mind Association Foreign Doctoral Studentship in Philosophy is restricted to people who are not eligible for EU fee rates or AHRC funding, and who will have completed an MA, BPhil, MPhil or equivalent qualification in Philosophy before the 2010-11 academic year. The Mind Association Foreign Doctoral Studentship in Philosophy will pay a total of £28,000 per annum for three years, out of which the successful candidate will be expected to pay tuition fees and maintenance expenses. Non-EU students who have already started a PhD at a UK university are eligible for the award but the Association will only fund completion of the first three years of their study.

Each UK Philosophy Department is allowed to put forward only one candidate for this competition. Applications must come from Heads of Philosophy Departments or from Departments’ Postgraduate Admissions Officers. An application should consist of a letter from the Head of Department or Postgraduate Admissions Officer, the candidate’s CV, two letters of reference including one from the proposed supervisor, a short description of the proposed doctoral research of not more than 500 words, one writing sample of not more than 6000 words, and an abstract of this writing sample of not more than 300 words. These application materials are due on 1 March. Applications should be sent in electronic form to Prof. Adrian Moore at adrian.moore@st-hughs.ox.ac.uk. The Mind Executive Committee will make its selection by 21 March. The Committee reserves the right to make no award if it thinks appropriate.
